Cloudflare Email Routing: send from your domain

Cloudflare Email Routing receives mail for your domain but can't send from it, and Gmail's Send mail as ends in January 2027. Here are the ways to reply as you@yourdomain, and what each costs.

Why Email Routing can't send for you

Email Routing is the inbound half: it takes mail addressed to your domain and forwards it to an inbox you already read, or hands it to a Worker. Sending is a separate Cloudflare product, Email Sending, part of Cloudflare Email Service. Sending to any recipient needs the Workers Paid plan; without it you can only send to destination addresses you have verified in your own account. [1]

So a forwarded message lands in, say, Gmail, and when you press Reply it goes out from your Gmail address, not the one it was sent to. Fixing that means adding a way to send. Wanting an inbox on Cloudflare itself rather than a forward? See Does Cloudflare host email? For mail to any address on the domain, see Catch-all email on Cloudflare. Forward not arriving? See Email Routing not working.

Gmail's Send mail as ends in January 2027

The common free fix has been Gmail's Send mail as: you give Gmail an SMTP server for your address, verify it, and choose it in the From menu. Google's help page now says that starting January 2027, Gmail will no longer support Send as for third-party email addresses. Google Workspace aliases and other Gmail addresses you own are not affected. [2]

If your domain's mail is forwarded by Email Routing into a personal Gmail account and you reply with Send mail as, plan for that setup to stop working, and check Google's page for the latest wording. What ends, the dates and what to check in your settings: Gmail Send mail as is ending.

Your options

Gmail Send mail as (until January 2027)
What you do: Point Gmail at an SMTP relay for your address and verify it. [2]
What it costs: Gmail is free; the relay has its own plans.
Google Workspace or another hosted mailbox
What you do: Move the domain's mail to the provider: they receive and send, and Email Routing is no longer needed.
What it costs: A monthly price per person, from the provider.
A Worker of your own
What you do: Write a Worker that receives through Email Routing and replies with Email Sending. Replies are limited to 50 recipients per email and a 5 MiB standard message. [3]
What it costs: Workers Paid, $5 a month from Cloudflare, plus Email Sending usage. [1]
Ayoh
What you do: Connect the domain; Ayoh sets up Email Routing, Email Sending, SPF and DKIM in your Cloudflare account, and gives you an inbox that sends and replies as your address.
What it costs: Nothing to Ayoh. Workers Paid, $5 a month, billed by Cloudflare.

How Ayoh does it

Ayoh is a mail app that runs in your own Cloudflare account, built on exactly these two halves: Cloudflare Email Routing receives, and Cloudflare Email Service sends. Your mail is stored in your account, not ours.

  1. Create a Cloudflare API token from the pre-filled form and paste it in. See Getting started.
  2. Connect your domain. Ayoh switches on Email Routing, adds the catch-all rule, registers the domain for sending and publishes the SPF and DKIM records. If the domain already gets mail elsewhere, it can use a subdomain such as mail.example.com and leave that mail alone. See Getting started.
  3. Create an address. Mail to it arrives in Ayoh, and replies go out from it, with a summary of each conversation and a drafted reply when a person writes.
