Does Cloudflare host email? A mailbox on your own account

Cloudflare has no mailbox product: Email Routing forwards mail and Email Sending sends it. A real inbox on Cloudflare means adding the part that stores and shows your mail. Here is what that takes and what it costs.

The short answer

Not as a mailbox you sign in to. Cloudflare Email Service has two halves. Email Routing takes mail sent to your domain and either forwards it to an address you have verified or hands it to a Worker, your own code. [1] Email Sending sends mail from your domain, from a Worker or the REST API, and is in public beta since April 16, 2026. [2] Neither one keeps your messages or gives you a place to read them.

That is why the usual setup is a forward into Gmail or Outlook. It works for receiving, but the mail lives in someone else's inbox, and replying as your own address needs a separate fix (see Cloudflare Email Routing: send from your domain). For the DNS records themselves, see SPF, DKIM and DMARC on Cloudflare.

What a mailbox on Cloudflare is made of

Everything a hosted mailbox does can run in one Cloudflare account, as long as something ties the pieces together. Prices are from Cloudflare's pricing pages. [3][4][5]

Receive mail for the domain
Cloudflare product: Email Routing, with a Worker as the destination
What it costs: Unlimited, on the free and paid plans
Send and reply as your address
Cloudflare product: Email Sending
What it costs: Workers Paid only: 3,000 emails a month included, then $0.35 per 1,000
Run the code that files mail
Cloudflare product: Workers
What it costs: Workers Paid is a $5 a month minimum per account
Keep messages and attachments
Cloudflare product: R2 storage
What it costs: 10 GB-month free each month, then $0.015 per GB-month
Keep the index: folders, threads, search
Cloudflare product: D1 database
What it costs: First 5 GB included on Workers Paid
Summaries and drafted replies (optional)
Cloudflare product: Workers AI
What it costs: 10,000 Neurons a day free, then $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons on Workers Paid

For one person sending a few dozen messages a day, that stays inside every allowance above, so the Cloudflare bill is the $5 Workers Paid minimum. Someone sending 5,000 messages a month would pay for the 2,000 beyond the included 3,000: about 70 cents more. Check the pricing pages for your own numbers, since Cloudflare sets them.

Three ways to get there

Forward to an inbox you have
What you do: Add a routing rule to your Gmail or Outlook address. [1]
Trade-off: Free and quick, but your mail is stored by that provider, and replying as your domain needs another service.
Write or deploy your own
What you do: Build a Worker that stores what Email Routing hands it, or deploy one of the open-source inboxes built on Cloudflare.
Trade-off: Your data stays in your account. You maintain the code, the DNS and the updates.
Ayoh
What you do: Paste a Cloudflare token and connect the domain. Ayoh sets up Email Routing, Email Sending, SPF and DKIM, and deploys the inbox into your account.
Trade-off: Your mail stays in your account, and the app is maintained for you. Ayoh charges nothing for mail.

How Ayoh does it

Ayoh is the mailbox part. It receives through Email Routing, sends through Email Sending, keeps messages in R2 storage and the index in D1, all in your Cloudflare account. On top of that it adds what a mail app should have: one conversation per row with a summary, a drafted reply when a person writes, search, contacts and a calendar.

  1. Create a Cloudflare API token from the pre-filled form and paste it in. See Getting started.
  2. Connect your domain. If it already gets mail somewhere else, use a subdomain such as mail.example.com and leave that mail alone. See Getting started.
  3. Create as many addresses as you like. Mail to them arrives in Ayoh, and replies go out from them.
